1. I am reporting research supported by a funding body that requires me to post an author manuscript to a subject area repository. Can I publish in Elsevier journals and comply with my funding body’s policy?
Elsevier has established funding body agreements and policies allowing authors who publish in Elsevier journals to comply with manuscript archiving requirements, as specified by conditions of researcher grant awards.
- Arthritis Research Campaign (UK)
- British Heart Foundation (UK)
- Cancer Research UK
- Chief Scientist Office
- Department of Health UK
- Howard Hughes Medical Institute (US)
- Medical Research Council (UK)
- National Institutes of Health (US)
- Wellcome Trust (UK)
Authors who report research supported by funding bodies not listed above, and who are concerned that Elsevier’s copyright policy may be incompatible with archiving requirements specified by a funding body that supports an author’s research, are strongly encouraged to contact Elsevier’s
Customer Support Team. Elsevier works on behalf of our authors to ensure authors can always publish in Elsevier journals and still comply with archiving conditions defined in research grant awards.
2. How can I comply with the archiving requirements of my funding body?
If you are reporting research by:
- The National Institutes of Health
After your article has been accepted for publication in an Elsevier journal, you will be asked in the author agreement whether the underlying research reported in the paper was funded by the NIH. Check the corresponding box acknowledging your article is reporting research funded by the NIH. Elsevier will send to PMC the version of the author’s manuscript that reflects any author-agreed changes made in response to peer-review comments, and authorizes its public access posting 12 months after final publication.
- Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI)
Elsevier's agreement with HHMI applies to scientists (includes HHMI investigators, group leaders and fellows at the Janelia Farm Research Campus, and other institute employees) whose articles are accepted after September 1, 2007. Prior to September 1 authors do not need to take any action.
If you are reporting research funded by:
- The Arthritis Research Campaign
- The British Heart Foundation
- Cancer Research UK
- Chief Scientist Office
- Department of Health UK
- Medical Research Council (UK)
- The Wellcome Trust
You should complete and submit the article sponsorship form. After submitting the form, you or your institution will be invoiced. Elsevier journals charge a fee to help offset the cost of peer review and other publishing costs. The above funding bodies will reimburse authors who have paid the fee. The fee has initially been set at $3,000 per article for all Elsevier journals except those published by Cell Press, which have a $5,000 per article fee, and The Lancet, which has a fee of £400 per page. The difference in fees for The Lancet and Cell Press reflects higher associated costs.
Upon final publication, Elsevier will send to PMC the final document used to generate the definitive published journal article that appears on ScienceDirect. This document reflects all author-agreed changes that arise from the peer-review, copy-editing and proofing processes. Elsevier will authorize its public posting on PMC, and PMC mirror sites, immediately. PMC and PMC mirror sites will also link directly to the final published journal article, which will continue to reside only on Elsevier’s websites and which Elsevier will make freely available to both non-subscribers and subscribers.
3. What if I am reporting research supported by multiple funding bodies?
If you are reporting research supported by more than one of the following funding bodies:
- The Arthritis Research Campaign
- The British Heart Foundation
- Cancer Research UK
- Chief Scientist Office
- Department of Health UK
- Medical Research Councel (UK)
- The Wellcome Trust
- The National Institutes of Health
You should complete and submit only one article sponsorship form. Please identify all funding bodies that supported your research.
Note: If you are only reporting research supported by the National Institutes of Health or Howard Hughes Medical Institute, you do not need to submit an article sponsorship form.
