Toxic wastes travel by water and air, sometimes displacing the effects of an environmental disaster entirely outside of its country of origin. It is now understood that to overcome the problems that face us international co-operation is required. This important work is designed to assist in that process, by helping to break down the language barriers that stand between countries. Modern biotechnology is a multidisciplinary field which deals with the practical use of microbial, plant or animal cells to produce goods or perform services for industry, trade and commerce. It is a symbiotic integration of aspects of several subjects whose literature is presently scattered among many specialist publications. Written and organized by the world's foremost biotechnology experts, this publication is be the most authoritative work of its kind. It provides information essential to researchers and students in academic, industrial and government institutions. It is also indispensable to personnel in manufacturing and service industries, particularly those involved with pharmaceuticals, foods and beverages, fuels, chemicals, waste treatment, agriculture, mining and medicine. PUBDATE: 19851201 LISTPRICE: 1640.00 REVIEW: ...work which lives up to its billing...the absense of stuffiness in the prose on inhibitory jargon is a strong incentive for the reader to explore the text rather than merely to use it for reference...Specialists have generally judged the treatments of their own areas to be thorough, well illustrated, topical and generously referenced...Murray Moo-Young and his colleagues have brought off a notable success in producing this work...Comprehensive Biotechnology will be an essential purchase for all departments and institutions, academic or industrial, that claim an interest in any aspect of the ill-defined field popularly known as biotechnology...

There are three major success factors by which to measure encyclopedic works. Two of these are under the control of the editor; the completeness of the work relative to the intent of the effort and the ease with which material may be located. The third is the degree to which researchers, scholars, students and others utilize the work and reference it in their own efforts... The completeness of this encyclopedia is perhaps one of its major achievements. An attempt has been made to include systems and control aspects of virtually every aspect of scientific and engineering endeavour... The second major measure of success is...accomplished by the inclusion of Indexes and a "Guide to Use of the Encyclopedia"... It is my recommendation that this encyclopedia is a must acquisition for every major library where support is given to the topics covered in systems and control. The writings are in good style, the depth of coverage in such a diverse field is excellent and the indexing is a definite plus for all users. In addition, universities in which these topics are a major activity, should acquire departmental copies for use of faculty and students alike. It is my expectation that as the encyclopedia finds its way to the shelves of most libraries, it will become a major citation source.

REVIEW: 1988
...the number of articles and subjects covered is veritably stupendous and could be managed only by the orchestration of people who see the field as a whole...The project organizers are to be congratulated for their success and to be rendered professional thanks...they have designed the work so that it is not static but can grow with the expected introduction of new developments in the field...the publication of regular supplementary volumes is already in preparation...The Encyclopedia, to my mind, has the best chances to become the Encyclopedia in the area of systems and control and also the Standard Reference in the area of Fuzzy Set Theory.

Perhaps the greatest contribution of this Encyclopedia will be to spur greater development of this area of study, to complement the great array of contributions reflected in its eight volumes.

Its reference value cannot be underestimated. Researchers and practitioners in this area of 'systems and control' will be at a grave disadvantage if their institutions do not offer this edition on the library shelves.

EDITION: VOLUME: PAGES: 276 PUBLISHER: Pergamon BINDING: HC DESCRIPTION: Hardbound. Tumor epidemiology has traditionally used an analytical approach. In order to study the role played by endogenous factors, such as the biological response to tumors, and genetic and physiological factors, a new approach is required. The retroviruses and oncogens illustrate the need to integrate the study of endogenous and exogenous factors in cancer epidemiology. The new ap proach proposed to cancer epidemiology could hopefully have relevant results, for instance in regard to iatrogenic tumors or tumor prevention. If the reason why most secondary tumors are either acute myeloid leukemias or lymphomas can be understood, it may be possible to prevent these iatrogenic tumors now seen in almost 10 per cent of long term survivors. Every profession, indeed every skilled trade, ought to have 'a book,' preferably 'the book' somewhere in its development. Some have needed to be chained to reading stands; some run to shelves of volumes; all perform the function of both symbolizing and realizing access to the critical dimensions of the activity: its language(s); its basic concepts and ideas; its locations, formal and informal; its outstanding members; its points of access and career possibilities; and, a vision of its future. Lifelong Education for Adults, notwithstanding its curious title, promises to perform a good many of those functions for adult education throughout the world.

This volume contains the proceedings of the highly successful conference organised by the Testicular Tumour Sub-Group of the Yorkshire Urological Cancer Research Group. The last 10 years have seen a revolution in the clinical management of germ cell tumours leading to a high proportion of cases being cured. At present vast improvements in our understanding have answered many questions, resulting in the refinement of therapy, but raised many more. This volume brings together contributions from a wide variety of clinical, paraclinical and laboratory disciplines which will undoubtedly enable these questions to be answered. In bringing together such a variety of contributions this book will greatly facilitate the exchange of information and ideas and promote future advances in this field. Special attention is paid to the problems involved in the production of viable cell lines in vitro and the attendant problems involved in their use in experimentation. AUTHOR: Brambilla, F. EDITION: VOLUME: PAGES: 426 PUBLISHER: Pergamon BINDING: HC DESCRIPTION: Hardbound. This volume includes the invited lectures and some of the oral communications delivered at the International Symposium "Disorders of Eating Behavior: A Psychoneuroendocrine Approach" held in Pavia, Italy on September 12th-15th, 1985. The purpose of the symposium was to bring up-to-date the knowledge on every type of pathology related to food intake. In this context, anorexia nervosa, bulimia and obesity may converge into a continuum in eating disorders, possibly based on common pathogenetic mechanisms. Many different factors may be responsible for these phenomena and in this volume they have been evaluated together in order to improve our understanding of the pathogenesis of the different syndromes and to propose more fruitful therapeutic approaches. A compendium of this kind has been long awaited and should herald a new era of research in the field. PUBDATE: 19861001 LISTPRICE: 106.00 REVIEW: 1987

It considers the definition of nonstochastic effects and the biology of the response, with particular emphasis on detriment and on differences between different tissues, so as to determine the compatibility between these factors and current understanding of ICRP recommendations.
